8 Items Every Catholic Home Should Have
When Luke and I first became Catholic, I began researching what items we needed to have in our home. What I love about the Catholic faith is how visual it is. This is why Catholic churches are often so beautiful. The visual effects offer only a glimpse of the beauty of heaven. God wants us to enjoy the beauty of His creation, and there are many ways to bring that beauty into your Catholic home. Today I am going to share eight things every Catholic should have in their home. This is just a basic list that will help your home become a domestic church.
What should Catholics have in their homes?
If you’re just getting started in making your home more Catholic, there are three items I think you should add to your home right away. These items are found in Catholic homes all around the world.
- Crucifix
- Rosary
- Bible
- Catechism
- Saint Statues/Icons/Sacred Artwork
- Holy Water
- Holy Water Font
- Prayer Cards/Holy Cards
Crucifix
Every Catholic home should have at least one blessed crucifix. When it comes to where to hang the crucifix, the first place is often over the front door. Many Catholics also include a crucifix in every bedroom. The crucifix is a visual reminder of Christ’s suffering and what it means for us, as Catholics. Placing a crucifix in the home represents that the home belongs to Christ, and that He is welcome there. The crucifix also serves as a great focal point during prayer.
We also have a crucifix in our bedroom over our bed, and plan to add a crucifix to each of our children’s bedrooms.
Rosary
Praying the Holy Rosary is a powerful prayer against evil. Anytime you are feeling troubled, anxious, or stressed, praying the rosary can bring a sense of calm and connectedness to God. Ideally, each family member should have their own rosary. You can use a rosary hanger placed in your living room or den to keep track of everyone’s rosaries.
Bible
A good Catholic bible is a must in any Catholic home. When Luke and I were going through RCIA we were given a copy of the New American Bible. Remember, the Catholic bible contains books that were removed from the Protestant bible.
Catechism
Another important item to have in your Catholic home is a Catholic catechism. Anytime you have a question about the Catholic faith or doctrine, you can go straight to the Catechism to find the answer.
How can I make my home more Catholic?
There are many ways you can incorporate Catholic home decor and make your home even more Catholic.
Saint Statues/Icons/Artwork
Many Catholics have a home altar, and they use this family altar for prayer and devotion. Items are often swapped out to reflect the liturgical seasons. On the Catholic home altar, you can include saint statues, icons, and various other artwork that will remind you to pray and bring you closer to God.
A few popular pieces of sacred art to look for to add to the walls of your home include a Sacred Heart of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and an image of the Divine Mercy. Luke and I have a picture of the Holy Family in our bedroom.
Saint statues can also be found on the home altar. You could choose a statue of your patron saint, or another saint whom you admire. I absolutely love my Mary Mother of God statue that my husband gave to me the year we went through RCIA.
Holy Water
It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of holy water in your home. You can get a small bottle online and use the holy water font at your parish to fill it. Use the holy water to bless your home and bless yourself and family members with the sign of the cross.
Holy Water Font
You can place a lovely holy water font by your door to hold holy water. You can bless yourself as you enter and leave your home. Holy water fonts make beautiful additions to any Catholic home. See beautiful holy water fonts for home.
Prayer Cards/Holy Cards
Other items that are good to have in your Catholic home are prayer cards or holy cards. Holy cards are small, about the size of a baseball card. They usually depict a religious picture or a saint and the back contains a prayer. These holy cards can be helpful when you feel the need to pray, but don’t quite know what to say.
Of course, only those top three items are truly necessary for you to live your faith. I love following A Catholic Mom’s Life, and she said something that really struck me in one of her videos. She said that if you really want one of the items I’ve mentioned above and maybe you don’t have the money to buy it, you can go to God in prayer, and you might just be surprised at how He brings that item to you in your life.
So, if you really want a picture of the Sacred Heart or you need a new rosary but can’t buy them, say a prayer.
